Travel to France

Posted in France Travel | 2 comments

No country embodies the grandeur of European travel quite like France. From the international artistic reputation of Cannes to the luxurious leisure of the Riviera, France has demonstrated a remarkable capacity to overcome a tumultuous history by enriching the quality of life with those experiences. The diversity of the country will leave you stimulated, satiated and asking for more when you finally treat yourself and travel to France!

Throughout European history, France has been the undisputed pioneer of social revolution and cultural renaissance. An enlightened society with classic charm, France will guide your journey seamlessly through centuries of power and progress, defeats and suffering, all of which possess an essence of timelessness. Travel France in July and witness Bastille Day, a commemoration of the destruction of the prison that King Louis XVI and his predecessors used to quiet social disruption and censor or torture public irritants. The day is symbolic of the value of social freedoms and democratic governance to the French people. The main celebration takes place in Paris at the former site of the Bastille.

Go further back in time and explore the French countryside, which is rich with Roman Ruins dating up until the 5th Century. Greoux-les-Bains, in the south of France, is known not only for its hot springs but also for the ruins of Roman bath tubs and swimming pools that depended on these springs as a source for hot water. Aix-en-Provence is a well known town central to France’s wine and art culture, but also shares a Roman past as an ancient city with two aqueducts demonstrating the technological prowess of the Roman people. With all of the building materials we now have at our disposal, and how readily we buy with our home depot coupons, its amazing that such structures exist so long ago without such resources.

For a more unique experience, travel to the Loire Valley, a bastion of medieval castles, and have yourself a true Cheateaux experience. Many of the ancient and classical castles have rooms available for rent, mainly during the summer season. There is no better way to be immersed in French history; plus, the castles often offer the best of the surrounding wine region.

French Travel: More Than a History Lesson
Not only is France a gateway into Europe’s enchanting history, the country that is world renowned for its irresistible food, fabulous wines and sophisticated lifestyle does live up to its reputation. Visit Nice to enjoy the coveted Riviera way of life while avoiding the throngs of tourists that swarm to St. Tropez just up the coast. While in Paris, make sure to enjoy a quiche lorraine in a local cafe somewhere on the outskirts of town in addition to scaling the Eiffel Tower or getting lost in the Louvre. However you choose to travel, there is no way to miss the robust culture and resilient history of France.

Entry from: Valence, France Entry Title: “Driving through the Rhone Valley” Entry: “And we’re back! Internet was pretty much non existent though the french countryside; so sorry for the late blog posts. At any rate; we decided in order to see the wine regions of France you have to drive, so yep, we rented a car! Freedom from bus, train, and metro schedules is amazing. Our first stop out of Provence was Orange, the gateway to the Rhone Valley. But as it was a Sunday, and a holiday, there wasn’t much to see, so we took off to drive through the vineyards of the famous Chateaunuf-de-pape region. It is better than you thought, seriously. We found a couple domaines in the hills that were actually open on Sunday, and then headed into the town where we had probably the best experience on our entire trip. We came upon a small wine shop, and the owner poured us the best wine we’d ever had, and topped it off with stories about the wine, his family, life in the Rhone, you name it. It was truly an unforgettable experience; and unforgettable wine, which we’ll be saving a bottle of for our 10th anniversary… when it will be at its prime. The next day we visited the St. Joseph region of the Rhone; further north. Again, amazing wine and amazing people. You’re supposed to call ahead to make an appointment with the

Entry from: Loire Valley, France Entry Title: “French chateaux and countryside” Entry: “I took a bus tour to visit the castles of the Loire Valley. Left Paris at 7:15am and had a 3 ¾ hour drive to our first stop. There were travellers from Australia, France, Spain and Japan. My high school Japanese came in handy along the way, as did the Spanish I have picked up from concentrating on Dora the Explorer when the kids watch it at school! Along the way we saw farms, fields full of the yellow plant that has the seed used in canola oil, forests and the Loire River. At 11am we arrived at Chenonceau and we were guided around the inside. Then we had free time to look at the gardens and go through the maze. The castle was being restored at the front so unfortunately could only get photos from one side, luckily it was the best side and the one I had hoped for. Next we drove to Cheverny where we looked inside, around the gardens and at the kennels. This was the only Chateaux that currently has a family in residence, so we could only see half of the building. Finally we drove to Chambord which was the most magnificent of them all! It really looked and felt like a castle from a fairytale. I got so camera happy, as you can see from all the pictures. We departed at 5:15pm and arrived back in Paris at 8:15pm. Daylight

Entry from: Toulon, France Entry Title: “Excellent Aix and perfect Provence” Entry: “Bon Jour! Today we’re in Provence – more accurately, near the city of Toulon, France in the port of La Seyne-Sur-Mer. It is a beautiful port for a change. But sadly, it is our last port of call. We’re on a Celebrity excursion – ‘Aix and Cezanne’. We’re following in the footsteps of impressionist painter Cezanne (1839-1906) who was born, lived and died in Aix-en-Provence or simply Aix. The bus took us to the city of Aix (pronounced ‘X’), which is about 75 minutes inland from the port. We first visited his studio, the Atelier Cezanne. Next we visited University Square and the Saint Sauveur Cathedral which was founded in the 4th century. It had a beautiful gothic apse and baptistery built over a Roman plaza with Roman columns that were scavenged from other sites. Our guide then led us thru some of the narrow streets explaining the history of some of the buildings. We finally ended up at an main boulevard where there was an open air market – more shopping! The shopkeepers were very friendly – they sure did not live up to the stereotype of the snotty French. After shopping, we eat lunch at a local café. It consisted of an appetizer of caprese salad (tomatoes and mozza cheese with a stuffed tomatoe of goat cheese

Entry from: Le Guislain, France, France Entry Title: “Expedition to Normandy” Entry: “This morning we packed up and left our place on the Rhine and set off for Normandy. The trip takes about 8 hours if we don’t stop, and crosses through Germany, Belgium and France. It was a perfect day for a trip, and the van cleared a bug-free path all the way. Towards the end of the trip the kids kept asking if it was raining, because the bugs got to be so thick on the windshield. We only made one wrong turn on this trip, and it only cost a few minutes. We’re getting better at Euro-driving . Best roads on this trip weren’t in Germany though, they were in France. Just goes to show that you get what you pay for, as the roads in Germany are free but the French roads were almost all toll and we paid some EUR 27 to cross from Belgium to Normandy. The place we’re staying is called La Maison Loufrain. It’s a converted stone barn divided into three apartments, furnished in a rustic style. It’s a little cozy for the seven of us but not in a bad way. Has all the things we need (like a washing machine, after 2 weeks of travel), plus a lot of character as well. Our host(ess) Liz Healey met us as we pulled in with the van, and was very gracious and friendly. Thanks to Liz for the welcome basket she placed in the apartment; we

If you enjoy skiing, there is nothing more exhilarating than the prospect of skiing through France. Whether taking advantage of some of the world’s best downhill runs, or heading cross country, France is a skiers paradise, and somewhere definitely not to be missed for any winter sports enthusiast. Amidst some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery, the fresh alpine air and magically contoured runs are truly a once in a lifetime experience. It really is no wonder that France is highly regarded as one of the best skiing nations in the world.

When skiing in France, you’d be mad not to go to the alps. Famous the world over for their excellent ski slopes, the alps also border on Switzerland, so you might also like to pop over and visit while you’re in town. And don’t worry if you don’t have your equipment – there are simply thousands of dedicated ski shops to serve the tourists, and some stock some pretty good bargains!

France is also home to the world famous Val d’Isere resort. A huge scenic expanse, the resort was made famous by top French skier Jean Claude Killy, and is a magnet for tourists all year round, with a near guarantee of absolutely perfect conditions. Additionally, the resort caters for all levels of experience and ability, and so you’re sure to find a challenge somewhere! To top it all, the resort boasts amazing facilities, from its ski lifts to its hotels and refreshment areas. The Val d’Isere really is a skier’s heaven.

France is fortunate enough to benefit from great wine, great food, great culture…as well as great skiing! If you decide to opt for France for your next skiing trip, don’t spend all your time on the slopes – get out there and experience a different style of living. Sample the delicacies, and experience the delights of this highly metropolitan European nation.

Why not look online for great French skiing deals? Thanks to the internet, holiday prices have really come down over the last few years, and you can find some real bargains with a bit of research. Additionally, there is no need to consider booking each individual element separately, given the sheer number of top quality package deals, which will come included with your skiing, accommodation, flights and lift pass. You might even be lucky enough to find a deal that includes some exotic French food to fill you up after a hard day on the slopes! Also, make sure you are in good enough shape to enjoy the whole skiing experience. Use medifast coupons to lose that last 20 lbs. so you can maneuver your best on the slopes.

Alternatively, you could just pop in to your local travel agents to see what they have on offer. Although the travel agent will usually inflate the price to cover their commission, you can still find some real bargains that aren’t available elsewhere. And what’s more, the travel agent can recommend where to go and what to see, and there is nothing quite like that personal recommendation. Additionally, he can help allay any fears or worries you may have about your holiday, and can answer any questions you might have. Again, it is important to shop around for the best deal, and this will also help you get a better idea of what your chosen resort is like as a whole.

Before leaving for France it is important to make sure you have a valid passport, with over six months before expiry. This will be absolutely critical for passing through French customs. If you need a new passport, you should allow around eight to ten weeks before leaving, given the lengthy application process. Make sure you plan well in advance – the passport is vital if you’re to set foot out of the country. Without it, you won’t get to experience the magic of French skiing, and additionally, you will lose the money you paid for your holiday, so this really is a vital consideration.
So why not consider France for your next skiing trip? The real home of skiing, France is waiting, and it doesn’t have to be as expensive as you might think!

Canal St-Martin, Paris (France) – Travel Guide

Posted in France Travel | 24 comments

Emmanuelle shows you where the locals go to get away from the city life. Location: 10th Arrondissement Canal St-Martin is where Parisians come to take a break from the city life. You can walk, you can bike, you can dine and even shop. Napoleon was responsible for the construction of the canal in the early 1800′s. Back then, many poor people were living here, unlike today, where the rich crowd apartments with a view of the canal. There are many boat tours here, to show you the 81 mile long Canal St-Martin along is a (unclear) on the history of this area. On the weekends, the streets along the canal are turned into biking and pedestrian areas. When you are hungry, you can eat at any one of the restaurants along the canal. They are cozy, they are small and you can find very good food. There are many budget hotels in this area. If you do not want to do anything else, you can come to the canal and skip stones in the water, like Amelie in the famous movie. This is Emmanuelle, showing you Paris.

He gave it to me to use with some slideshows and clips as long as I credited him. The first two photos are above Autoir, France and may show chemtrails. The rest of the photos are in Martel, known as the City of Towers. Les Halles, the marketplace, is open every Wednesday morning. We enjoyed it and then had a restaurant lunch there on a terrace facing it. We enjoyed local products such as foie gras, walnuts, polenta in cassoulet, saffron rice (they produce very good saffron here) and fresh, ripe figs. This region also produces much tobacco, fruit, corn and dairy products, including lots of goat and beef products. In July and August, Les Halles in Martel has free live music. It must be very pleasant, but we avoid vacation travel in Europe in July and August, preferring September and other off-peak times. The Quercy region of France is fascinating and has a rich history. We stayed in a rented, furnished 17th century house in Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, in the Corrèze département. The landlady does not speak English, but I could connect you. It was very inexpensive and sleeps five. We never had to buy more diesel fuel during our week here for our little car. So many things are right around, you don’t have to do any long drives. We tried to rent in Martel for the week but the place was
