Entry from: Toulon, France Entry Title: “Excellent Aix and perfect Provence” Entry: “Bon Jour! Today we’re in Provence – more accurately, near the city of Toulon, France in the port of La Seyne-Sur-Mer. It is a beautiful port for a change. But sadly, it is our last port of call. We’re on a Celebrity excursion – ‘Aix and Cezanne’. We’re following in the footsteps of impressionist painter Cezanne (1839-1906) who was born, lived and died in Aix-en-Provence or simply Aix. The bus took us to the city of Aix (pronounced ‘X’), which is about 75 minutes inland from the port. We first visited his studio, the Atelier Cezanne. Next we visited University Square and the Saint Sauveur Cathedral which was founded in the 4th century. It had a beautiful gothic apse and baptistery built over a Roman plaza with Roman columns that were scavenged from other sites. Our guide then led us thru some of the narrow streets explaining the history of some of the buildings. We finally ended up at an main boulevard where there was an open air market – more shopping! The shopkeepers were very friendly – they sure did not live up to the stereotype of the snotty French. After shopping, we eat lunch at a local cafĂ©. It consisted of an appetizer of caprese salad (tomatoes and mozza cheese with a stuffed tomatoe of goat cheese
