Entry from: Avignon, France Entry Title: “Avignon and beautiful Provence” Entry: “July 5 We had a short bus ride today, arriving in Avignon just about noon. Avignon is a beautiful, small city — perfect for walking and enjoying the history. Avignon was a Papal city in the 14th century, until the Popes moved back to Rome. The entire historical centre of the city is still walled, with gates spaced evenly along the barrier. Our hotel was quite central and we walked through the centre of the city before finding a handy info centre. We managed to catch a tour of the countryside during the late afternoon and early evening. First we reached St. Remy, where there are Roman ruins nearby dedicated to the Emperor Augustus’ grandsons who died in battle near here. While taking pictures here we were bombarded by the sounds of cicadas in the trees — if you haven’t heard them before, try imagining a bird-reptile cross (like the raptors in Jurassic Park) — quite disturbing. We also saw a rock formation that is prominent in a Van Gogh painting, as he spent the last years of his life in the hospital (for crazy people) near here. After St. Remy we drove through more of the countryside of Provence and arrived at Les Beux de Provence, a little village perched in the cliffs. This was a beautiful place with old stone …
