Entry from: Bordeaux, France Entry Title: “Oysters, foie gras, cheese, and wine” Entry: “My first sight of Mont-Saint-Michel is across flat green water-logged fields dotted with sheep. It seems a mirage at first, a tiny protrusion above the landscape. As I get closer it grows, and seems even more surreal. Eventually I reach the causeway which now allows you to drive across to the car park below the walls, which gets flooded by the tide every day (tide times are published to prevent your car being flooded or washed away). Before the causeway was built you had to walk about a kilometer across the sands, between the tides. I arrive on a freezing cold night with no accommodation booked and wander up and down alleyways and steps and eventually choose a place to stay. Inside there are nooks and crannies and stairs everywhere, and along the corridors there are signed pictures and photographs of many of the people who have stayed here – among the assorted royalty, film stars, writers, etc, I find one signed by Leon Trotsky (who was later to be bludgeoned to death with a pick-axe in Mexico). There are hardly any restaurants open and I choose the vastly less expensive one of the 3 available, and have one of the worst meals I’ve ever had – nearby is a famous oyster-producing area and naturally I order oysters as

Past “ROYAL/IMPERIAL Houses of Europe”: comparative estimate of their wealth, prior to downfall?

Question: Past “ROYAL/IMPERIAL Houses of Europe”: comparative estimate of their wealth, prior to downfall?
I’m watching a “Rick Steve’s Travels” program on our local PBS-TV, about Munich/Bavaria, Germany and its former Royal Ruling House of the “Wittelsbachs. It was featuring all of the opulent display in their residences of their wealth.

Relatedly, I can remember from a college course, that the estimated combined income of the first two estates of the Estates General of the French three prior to the Revolution – the Clergy/Nobility(and the Monarchy) – was although they only constituted 5% of the population, totalled 95% of the GDP(correct measurement-?).

And this caused me to wonder if there has ever been a study made of the estimated comparative wealth of all the former Royal/Imperial houses of Europe before they ceased to exist: from either overthrow/extermination or abdication:

France – Bourbon
Austria/Hungary – Hapsburgs
Germany – Hohenzollerns
Bavaria – Wittelsbachs
Russia – Romanovs
etc.

Not interested in – please don’t relate to/include – any that still exist; such as the British or Dutch, etc.

Any responses appreciated; even if they’re off the top of your head – including maybe a 1/10 rating,

Alberich

“mephistopheles”: thanks very much.

Even though the Medici house became an extremely wealthy one, I don’t believe that it ever became a Royal/Imperial house.

Any title such would have to be ordained by the Church.

An aristocratic title would only have to be recognized according to feudal law – not, “divine”.

I’m not sure but just to add to thy list:
I would imagine the House of Medici, the extremely influential Florentine family from the 13th to 17th century must have yielded considerable wealth.
