Entry from: Nice, France Entry Title: “The French Riviera!” Entry: “From Cinque Terre, I took the train along the Italian coast and back to France and the French Riviera. I stayed in Nice, and made that my base to explore the coast line. The first day, I walked down into Old Nice, where they have a fresh flower and vegetable market that is set up in the streets. It was pretty large, and bustling with people. I’m sure the locals who were actually there to get their weekly produce were frustrated with all the tourists who were getting in their way. From there, you go south one block and you’re right on the boardwalk and beachfront. I wanted to spend part of the day at the beach, and the staff at my hostel told me the beaches at the next seaside town along the coast, Villafranche, are much nicer, so I decided to walk there (about an hour and a half walk). On the way, I passed the port of Nice and checked out all the million-dollar private yachts. The French Riviera is apparently the place to be if you’ve got a mega-yacht, as they were everywhere! From the port, I walked around the coast to Villafranche and lied on the beach for a few hours…very relaxing. I also walked around the town a little bit and then hiked back to Nice. The pictures will tell a much better story than I can. The terrain of the

Entry from: Nice, France Entry Title: “Nice, the Mediterrean Sea, and the “beach”" Entry: “Thursday, June 24, afternoon in Nice, France After getting back from our morning of touring we had the afternoon to explore Nice. Most of the students wanted to go to the “beach” and swim which was ok by me I was ready for some down time so to the beach we went. Now as much as I have enjoyed Nice the rocky “beach” is really not all that great. Rocks are hard, hard to walk on, hard to sit on, and hard to lie on. I will say the beach was crowded with people and no one else seemed to mind the rocks so I guess it’s just us Americans who think a beach means sand. Anyhow besides the rocks the students also got the full European experience at the beach. Topless sun bathers were common and thong swim trunks, on men, we also in fashion. The students had been prepared before we went to the beach but knowing something and actually seeing it are two different things, but the sun was wonderful and I will be coming home with a nice tan. The other cool thing about the beach was the Nice airport is located at the end of the beach but right along the water so when the planes take off they take off straight towards the beach so it was enjoyable watching the planes fly overhead wondering whose private plane it might be flying away

Entry from: Rennes, France Entry Title: “Mont Saint Michel and Paris revisited” Entry: “Le Mont Saint Michel in Normandy, France was a place that I had been wanting to visit long before I came over to Europe. Taking advantage of a few spare days before starting a new job in London, I decided that I had the perfect opportunity to make the short trip to France. Mont Saint Michel is difficult to describe. It’s a large rock island covered with medieval buildings and crowned with an enormous Abbey. When taken in all at once it looks like a fairytale castle. At certain times when the tide is in, it becomes almost completely surrounded by water. Walking in the main gate you have to make your way up the cobbled streets and through the gauntlet of restaurants and souvenir shops. From there, you join the queue for access to the abbey. Once inside, you follow a designated route up many stairs and through different rooms. It’s difficult to imagine how the rooms were ever used, most of them are empty to accommodate the throngs of tourists. But they all have beautiful ornate ceilings and old glass windows. In the top part of the abbey (that is accessible to tourists) you can walk out onto a large stone terrace where you can see out over the great expanse of the surrounding water and mud flats and down over the

Entry from: Nice, France Entry Title: “No storm stops me having my dinner…” Entry: “Got back to France, hit the bars- specifically a “Scandinavian” bar called Thors- met a Scouse bar man- he told me the only connection it had to Scandinavia was that lots of Norwegian girls sometimes went in, but I didn’t see any, went to sleep after meeting a couple from Altanta, Georgia, a man from Alabama and one from Tennessee… Wokew up this morning and saw the sights of Nice, not much to see, was on the hill when a thunderstorm began, but sitting under those trees at the highest point in Nice didn’t stop me finishing my dinner, am in an Aussie bar right now, the web is free as long as you are drinking, which I am- one of the blokes here is from Stoke and gave me a free beer. Went to LaKing (Italian pub- had a hoegarden), MaNolans (Expensive Irish pub) and finally back to Thors- where I got talkingf to the Scouse on his day ofgf (well, I saw him in the Aussie bar earlier), turns out his name is Raff, so I hung around with him, a bloke from oxford, a swedish barmaid and her (swedish) boyfriend before wandering back to the hostel..eventually…” Read and see more at: www.travelpod.com Photos from this trip: 1. “Cool looking church” 2. “Palm trees” 3. “Fountain” 4. “And again” 5. “The Med..” 6. “Promenade

Entry from: Lyon, France Entry Title: “Tour de France” Entry: “To continue my epic journey through Europe… I left Paris and found myself heading south to the town of Tours in the Loire valley. I received a response from someone accepting me to couchsurf at their place- a nice girl named Clement. Since I could not manage to get my phone to work before leaving Paris I hoped that Clement would be there to pick me up at the train station in Tours. When I exited the train, I looked around for a young girl who would also be searching for someone to pick up. This is the uncertainty of couchsurfing. Each time I exit the train I must look around for someone I have never met before and whose appearance I do not recognize. Normally with my phone I am able to communicate and choose a meeting point but this time without a working phone I just hoped I could locate another lost person looking for me. I reached the nose of the train and stood there feeling alone. Next to me stood a young guy with bouncy blond curls, checking his watch and looking around with the same bewildered look on his face. I stared at him wondering if maybe he was the friend Clement said might have to come get me in her place. Then another short brunette guy walked up to the blond and said something in french that sounded like I did not
