Internet was pretty much non existent though the french countryside; so sorry for the late blog posts. At any rate; we decided in order to see the wine regions of France you have to drive, so yep, we rented a car! Freedom from bus, train, and metro schedules is amazing. Our first stop out of Provence was Orange, the gateway to the Rhone Valley. But as it was a Sunday, and a holiday, there wasn’t much to see, so we took off to drive through the vineyards of the famous Chateaunuf-de-pape region. It is better than you thought, seriously. We found a couple domaines in the hills that were actually open on Sunday, and then headed into the town where we had probably the best experience on our entire trip. We came upon a small wine shop, and the owner poured us the best wine we’d ever had, and topped it off with stories about the wine, his family, life in the Rhone, you name it. It was truly an unforgettable experience; and unforgettable wine, which we’ll be saving a bottle of for our 10th anniversary… when it will be at its prime. Entry from: Loire Valley, France Entry Title: “French chateaux and countryside” Entry: “I took a bus tour to visit the castles of the Loire Valley. Left Paris at 7:15am and had a 3 ¾ hour drive to our first stop. There were travellers from Australia, France, Spain and Japan. My high school Japanese came in handy along the way, as did the Spanish I have picked up from concentrating on Dora the Explorer when the kids watch it at school! Along the way we saw farms, fields full of the yellow plant that has the seed used in canola oil, forests and the Loire River. At 11am we arrived at Chenonceau and we were guided around the inside. Then we had free time to look at the gardens and go through the maze. The castle was being restored at the front so unfortunately could only get photos from one side, luckily it was the best side and the one I had hoped for. Next we drove to Cheverny where we looked inside, around the gardens and at the kennels. This was the only Chateaux that currently has a family in residence, so we could only see half of the building. Finally we drove to Chambord which was the most magnificent of them all! It really looked and felt like a castle from a fairytale. I got so camera happy, as you can see from all the pictures. We departed at 5:15pm and arrived back in Paris at 8:15pm. Daylight …

Today we’re in Provence – more accurately, near the city of Toulon, France in the port of La Seyne-Sur-Mer. It is a beautiful port for a change. But sadly, it is our last port of call. We’re on a Celebrity excursion – ‘Aix and Cezanne’. We’re following in the footsteps of impressionist painter Cezanne (1839-1906) who was born, lived and died in Aix-en-Provence or simply Aix. The bus took us to the city of Aix (pronounced ‘X’), which is about 75 minutes inland from the port. We first visited his studio, the Atelier Cezanne. Next we visited University Square and the Saint Sauveur Cathedral which was founded in the 4th century. It had a beautiful gothic apse and baptistery built over a Roman plaza with Roman columns that were scavenged from other sites. Our guide then led us thru some of the narrow streets explaining the history of some of the buildings. We finally ended up at an main boulevard where there was an open air market – more shopping! The shopkeepers were very friendly – they sure did not live up to the stereotype of the snotty French. After shopping, we eat lunch at a local café. It consisted of an appetizer of caprese salad (tomatoes and mozza cheese with a stuffed tomatoe of goat cheese …

My neighbor’s DEAD tree was struck by lightning and a branch fell on my power line, pulling down my line and ripping the meter from the house. IPL won’t repair the line until I have an electrician run new wire from my fuse box to the meter. It’s a little difficult arranging for an electrician and IPL from France. Entry from: Le Bugue, France Entry Title: “Verdant valley of chateaux et cheveaux” Entry: “On Tuesday morning, due to the frustrating events of the previous day, I’d looked up and booked my next two nights’ accommodation near le Bugue, south of Perigieux in the Dordogne. I’d had enough of taking chances, getting lost and paying through my **** for last minute highway hotels. But at every turn I realise I’ve forgotten something. On the highway, getting worryingly close to Bordeaux, I realised I had no idea how to get to le Bugue, although I had directions from Perigieux to the B&B, I was driving randomly south — away from where I should be heading. A spot of luck found me at a Shell station where I bought a map of France and all its roads as well as a sandwich, my hunger having reached the point of turning my brain to jelly and my nerves to frayed ends. Remember it was now late afternoon and I’d not eaten except for olives and wine! I planned a route via Pons toward Perigieux on the country roads where the views are better than on the freeway — also the freeway didn’t go to Perigieux so I had some justification. Despite the good signage I lost the road and wound through amazing countryside for an extra 45 minutes before finding myself ten kilometres down the road I had been on before and heading for …
