Entry from: Nice, France Entry Title: “The French Riviera!” Entry: “From Cinque Terre, I took the train along the Italian coast and back to France and the French Riviera. I stayed in Nice, and made that my base to explore the coast line. The first day, I walked down into Old Nice, where they have a fresh flower and vegetable market that is set up in the streets. It was pretty large, and bustling with people. I’m sure the locals who were actually there to get their weekly produce were frustrated with all the tourists who were getting in their way. From there, you go south one block and you’re right on the boardwalk and beachfront. I wanted to spend part of the day at the beach, and the staff at my hostel told me the beaches at the next seaside town along the coast, Villafranche, are much nicer, so I decided to walk there (about an hour and a half walk). On the way, I passed the port of Nice and checked out all the million-dollar private yachts. The French Riviera is apparently the place to be if you’ve got a mega-yacht, as they were everywhere! Entry from: Nice to Monte Carlo, France Entry Title: “The Riviera” Entry: “We arrived in Nice and rented a car at the airport. It was a SmartCar. We have had many rental cars during our travels, but this was the first SmartCar. It was very interesting to drive, but I don’t think I want one at home yet. We drove east along the coast to the area in France above Monte Carlo. The Grand Prix was in progress. You can’t really see anything other than a glimpse because of the distance and all the barricades they put up. But it was thrilling just to hear the Formula One cars and know you are that close. It was almost like being part of it without the exorbitant cost of a ticket!! I will never get tired of the magnificent views around every curve when you drive along the Riviera. Next, we went south to Cannes and arrived just in time to watch some of the arrivals for the closing festivities of the International Film Festival. We couldn’t get very close, there was security and barricades everywhere. But they had large screen TVs, like they do at concerts, and we saw Dustin Hoffman and Dennis Hopper. We were extremely jet lagged so we headed to our hotel near the Old Harbor in Nice. It was a small hotel, just OK, but nothing to write about. I think we were lucky to get something that close to the harbor with
