Entry from: Valence, France Entry Title: “Driving through the Rhone Valley” Entry: “And we’re back! Internet was pretty much non existent though the french countryside; so sorry for the late blog posts. At any rate; we decided in order to see the wine regions of France you have to drive, so yep, we rented a car! Freedom from bus, train, and metro schedules is amazing. Our first stop out of Provence was Orange, the gateway to the Rhone Valley. But as it was a Sunday, and a holiday, there wasn’t much to see, so we took off to drive through the vineyards of the famous Chateaunuf-de-pape region. It is better than you thought, seriously. We found a couple domaines in the hills that were actually open on Sunday, and then headed into the town where we had probably the best experience on our entire trip. We came upon a small wine shop, and the owner poured us the best wine we’d ever had, and topped it off with stories about the wine, his family, life in the Rhone, you name it. It was truly an unforgettable experience; and unforgettable wine, which we’ll be saving a bottle of for our 10th anniversary… when it will be at its prime. The next day we visited the St. Joseph region of the Rhone; further north. Again, amazing wine and amazing people. You’re supposed to call ahead to make an appointment with the …

Entry from: Loire Valley, France Entry Title: “French chateaux and countryside” Entry: “I took a bus tour to visit the castles of the Loire Valley. Left Paris at 7:15am and had a 3 ¾ hour drive to our first stop. There were travellers from Australia, France, Spain and Japan. My high school Japanese came in handy along the way, as did the Spanish I have picked up from concentrating on Dora the Explorer when the kids watch it at school! Along the way we saw farms, fields full of the yellow plant that has the seed used in canola oil, forests and the Loire River. At 11am we arrived at Chenonceau and we were guided around the inside. Then we had free time to look at the gardens and go through the maze. The castle was being restored at the front so unfortunately could only get photos from one side, luckily it was the best side and the one I had hoped for. Next we drove to Cheverny where we looked inside, around the gardens and at the kennels. This was the only Chateaux that currently has a family in residence, so we could only see half of the building. Finally we drove to Chambord which was the most magnificent of them all! It really looked and felt like a castle from a fairytale. I got so camera happy, as you can see from all the pictures. We departed at 5:15pm and arrived back in Paris at 8:15pm. Daylight …

Entry from: Dordogne Valley, France Entry Title: “The Heart of France” Entry: “Since La Rochelle the trip has taken a slower pace not driving huge distances as we have made our way over towards the Dordogne region. Today for the first time we have decided to stay put for two nights and not go anywhere. We’re the only people on a free camp spot right next to the Dordogne itself. The site belongs to a hotel, and as its still early season so the whole area is deserted. We still can’t get over how these places encourage campervans to stay free in these stunning areas, I have tried to take photos which show off these spots, but they don’t really do them justice. I reckon The French must really be proud of their country and must have allot of respect for this service as they are always spotlessly clean and the campers never leave a mess. I couldn’t imagine this ever working back home, its just nice to be able to stay still without someone trying to put there hand in your pocket! We only decided to leave La Rochelle as we wanted to stop on a camp site to freshen up properly, and the sites in the town were closed. So we hopped over to Ile d’Oleron, and found a great site with everything you could possibly need including a heated indoor swimming pool, after a week on the road it felt like we were staying at …

Entry from: Beziers Villeneuve, France Entry Title: “Robyn at the Markets” Entry: “After a night in Beziers, we moved on to Villeneuve, a port 4 kms along. Robyn and Thea had pastries and coffee at an award winning patisserie before John and Thea headed off back to Carcassonne by car. Let me tell you a story about Robyn and the eternal search for the perfect flea market. This trip it began in Ireland where she wanted to re-cross the country to attend an antique auction, hoping to find “a suitcase full of old letters”. Hmmm In Avignon she had us up at dawn traipsing to a particular square which was reputed to hold the “marche aux puces” (literally- fleas). But nothing was happening. Then just as we were about to leave, a van pulled up and started unloading plastic bags of bric a brac- lamps, textiles etc. “C’est la marche aux puces?” Robyn asked the driver. “No, we’re moving!” he replied in English!! She found a few “vide greniers” (attic clear-outs, or car-boot sales), so called “brocante” markets with standard op-shop fare, and ordinary “cheap socks and bags” type markets, without finding the elusive treasure trove she had hope for. Finally on the last day of our boat trip she spotted 3 sheds out of Beziers that advertised “brocante…antiques”. She popped off on the one-speed bike and found an …
