Entry from: Antibes, France Entry Title: “Visa Processing in Paradise” Entry: “With my STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) qualification in hand and some advice from friends at home familiar with the Superyacht Industry, I headed for Antibes, known as the hub for white boats in the Mediterranean, intent on landing a job as a stewardess that would take me to the Caribbean for the summer season. It’s true to say that I didn’t know exactly how I was going to get a job with no hospitality experience. Indeed, I was bluntly told my one agent that I had absolutely nothing to offer. Undiscouraged by that bitch, I knew that if other people could do it then so could I…and I did! Registering with some agents a few days in advance paid off with an email waiting in my inbox upon arrival inviting me for an interview first thing the very next morning. Scrambling around town with all my luggage, I had just enough time to make myself presentable, buying a new outfit and getting a much needed haircut and manicure. All scrubbed up, I arrived with my game face on only for that agent to have been delayed due to a train incident, which I later found out to be a bona fide track suicide! On I went to the next agency on my list for a “meet & greet.” It was as a result of this that I …
Read MoreQuestion: Overstay Student Schengen Visa?
Ok. I am a 21 year old American student currently studying in France with a 6 month student visa. I recently decided to stay in France for the summer to do an internship, but the problem is, my student visa is going to expire in mid July, and my internship lasts until the beginning of August. I am currently planning on flying out of Germany in mid August, 21 days after my student visa is going to expire. I did not apply for a French residency card when I first got here because I was not expecting to need one, and now it is too late to apply for one. I also can’t apply for a work visa because my internship is unpaid. I have heard about people being fined and BANNED from the Schengen zone for overstaying their visas, and I would really rather avoid this. So my questions are:
1. Is there any chance that I get the 90 day “travel” grace period that normal tourists get, on top of my 6 month student visa?
2. For tourists, the Schengen zone has a rule about only being able to spend 90 days per every 180 days in the Schengen zone. This in mind, if I were to leave the Schengen zone (US or England), would I be able to immediately return with a fresh tourist stamp, or would I be out of luck for the next 6 months?
3. Is there any other way to extend my visa?
4. What are the odds of me getting caught for over staying my visa, and what are the odds of actually getting banned for a few years?
Thanks!

1. There is no “grace” period. You need to leave when your visa is up. However you may be re-admitted as a tourist if you leave and then re-enter the Schengen area (e.g. from the UK).
2. You can re-enter Schengen as a tourist, as your stay as a student on a long term national visa does not count towards the Schengen quota. However be prepared for questions as immigration may suspect (and rightly I might add) that you are returning not as a tourist but rather to illegally prolong your student stay.
3. Probably yes. Inquire at the student affairs bureau of your sponsoring university/study institution. They deal with these kinds of problem all the time.
4. Very high. You’ll be in the computer an immigration will notice if you’ve overstayed. Whether or not you’ll be banned depends on whether the individual immigration officials feel such a ban is warranted in your case or whether they are willing to make an exception in your case – but there are no guarantees you won’t be banned if you overstay.
Question: Europe Travel – “Is there a fee to use VISA / Mastercard?”?
I am travelling to Europe (France and Italy) in April 2007 and I have a VISA (credit – Chase) and Mastercard (debit – Washington Mutual). Is there a fee everytime when I use them? Which one is better – credit / debit or VISA / Mastercard? Do they have lower convertion rate than cashing out Euro in US banks?
